Dr. Dennis Gross began his career as a skin cancer researcher, actively involved in Interferon and Cancer Immunology research. While doing this research, he frequently grew skin cells in a test tube, identifying the skin’s different elements. This study of normal and abnormal skin cells allowed Dr. Gross to learn what causes skin cells to be healthy—or not, and created in him a passionate interest in dermatology.
After starting his own practice and working directly with patients, Dr. Gross realized that chemical peels—particularly those done with glycolic acid—could be irritating to some individuals’ skin and didn’t always produce the hoped-for results. He decided to go back to the lab to see what he could do to find a solution and created the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel Professional System, which he used on the patients at his practice. At the request of his clients, who were delighted with the results, he created MD Skincare, a line of at-home products.
When Dr. Gross founded MD Skincare, he wanted to create a line of skincare products that combined the best of what nature and science had to offer. One of the distinctive features of his product line is his use of both alpha and beta hydroxy acids.
Alpha hydroxy acids occur naturally and include lactic, which comes from dairy products; glycolic, from sugar; malic, which comes from apples; and citric, from citrus fruits. AHAs weaken the bonds between cells in the outer, dead layer of skin, which aids in exfoliation and speeds up the normal shedding process. By helping to remove this dull layer of dead skin cells and therefore revealing the new skin cells underneath, alpha hydroxy acids improve the texture of skin, unclog pores, can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and may aid in the building of collagen and elastin, both of which help to firm skin.
Beta hydroxy acids are synthetic acids generated from willow bark and birch and are sometimes called salicylic acids. Despite the fact that beta hydroxy acids are synthetic—medical-grade BHAs are created in a laboratory—they are similar in structure to a naturally occurring acid in the skin, so they generally are non-irritating.
During his time in the lab, Dr. Gross discovered that when several different acids such as AHAs and BHAs are combined, their effectiveness is greatly increased, but each can be used in much lower concentrations. These milder concentrations mean that the products are the least irritating to skin.
To sample some of MD Skincare’s most popular products, check out the Cult Classic Kit. The kit contains the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel and the All-in-One Facial Cleanser with Toner. The innovation that launched the MD Skincare line, the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel is a two-step peel that stimulates collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while visibly reducing pore size and improving skin texture and tone. The All-in-One Facial Cleanser with Toner contains a cleanser, toner and makeup remover and automatically adjusts to your skin type to prevent irritation.
